          Ladybird Book Collectors Notes

If you are discovering the pleasure of old Ladybird Books for the first time you may find identifying the age and issue of a book a little confusing. Many dealers simply quote the date shown inside the book cover or on the title page, which is misleading for the unwary.

There are clues that may help identify the true age.

Tally Number: In the 60’s and 70’s the books often stated (on the rear board or inside the dust-cover) the number of Ladybird titles that were available . This is called the ‘Tally Number’. Obviously the lower the number, the earlier the book. As a guide we have listed below the numbers and the years.

TALLY YEAR TALLY YEAR TALLY YEAR TALLY YEAR
          100 1963 170 1966 240 1969 300 1972
          120 1964/5 180 1967 250 1969 320 1973
          135 1965 190 1967 260 1969 330 1973
          140 1965/6 200 1968 270 1970 340 1973
          150 1966 210 1968 280 1970 350 1974
          160 1966 225 1968 290 1971 360 1974

Price: The purchase price of the books is always shown on earlier Ladybird Books, either printed on the rear cover or inside the book. For many years Ladybird Books were sold for 2/6. For a short period (1969-1971) books carried a dual price, 2/6 |12 1/2p to prepare people for the changeover to Decimal currency. From then on books were priced in pence, at first 15p and increasing from there.

Appearance of Books: The early Ladybird Books have illustrated dust-covers (jackets). Dust-covers were phased out around 1964 and changed to full coloured matt boards. During the 1970s laminated covers were gradually introduced replacing the matt.

Publisher: Originally the publisher of these books was Wills & Hepworth Ltd and in 1971 the name was changed to Ladybird Books Ltd. If it does not say Wills & Hepworth it was produced after 1971.

First Editions: Only more recent Ladybird publications state whether they are First Editions. For earlier books whether it is a First Edition has to be deduced from one or more of the above clues.

Most of our books are either excellent or very good condition. We grade them as either excellent, very good or good. On occasions rarer copies may be offered which are below our normal standard but we will describe them as accurately as possible.
